I’ve been doing a lot of research on loose skin lately, since I have over 150lbs to lose and will certainly end up with some by the end of my weight loss. And I thought I’d go ahead and share some of the tips and info that I have found. Please keep in mind that I cannot guarantee any of these tips will work, and that curently I have no experience with loose skin. I can say that I will be trying most of these tips, and hopefully will be able to report back in like a year-and-a-half with my findings :P ‘Til then take these tips with a grain of salt.
HYDRATION. Drink water, at least a gallon a day. Someone mentioned drinking twice their weight in ounces of water daily, but I can hardly drink 144oz. without feeling like a water baby. Drink a gallon on workout days and on your rest days, always stay hydrated. This is a good tip for anyone, btw, not just those wanting to lose/avoid loose skin, staying hydrated is good for your skin at any weight.
EXFOLIATE. Take a dry washcloth or loofah and, using a circular motion, rub the areas you feel that you are most likely to have loose skin before you get into the shower. This is supposed to increase circulation in the area and promote cellular renewal.
MOISTURIZE. After your shower, moisturize the sag-prone areas with vitamin E and cocoa butter. Someone suggested Palmer’s Skin Therapy Oil, since it has both cocoa butter and vitamin E. You should also moisturize again at night before you go to sleep.
VITAMINS. Along with the vitmins you’ll be rubbing into your skin, to help boost collagen you should also be taking vitamin E and D orally. Fish oil also helps with general skin, hair and nail health. And of course take your multi.
LOSE WEIGHT SLOWLY. I am sure that everyone has heard this one, but it begs repeating. Shoot to lose only 2lbs or less per week, the less quick shock weight loss you throw at your body, the more likely it should be for your skin to play catch up.
LIFT HEAVY WEIGHTS. aka “tone”. This helps you lose weight by increasing your BMR, which will become harder as you get down to a lower weight. Increased muscle size also helps fill in lost volume.
LOSE EVEN MORE FAT. This I would probably manage to explain wrong, so here is my source. I have seen more than one person post saying that this helped them tighten their loose skin. Get down to a super low bodyfat %, like cut bodybuilder style. For men this would be in the single digits, for ladies around 11%. Please don’t attempt this part without talking to a doctor. Also I don’t suggest buying his book, though that is the main goal of his article.
PATIENCE. It can take loose skin 2-3 years to fully retract as much as it is going to. Some people cannot handle this, and surgery would probably be their best bet. Just keep in mind that there is no miracle cure to get rid of your extra skin over night, give your skin some time before sending yourself under the knife.
